Museum of Visual Materials 2007

Bookmark and Share

Formerly home to the Consolidated Tank Line, this quartzite structure dates back to the 1880’s and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a contributing structure to the Old Courthouse and Warehouse District.

The Museum of Visual Materials supports ongoing efforts to preserve historic downtown Sioux Falls. An Historic Preservation Easement was granted in 2006 for the west facade, for which an 1898 photo provided guidance in the restoration effort.

The interior of the building has been stripped back to its original bare quartzite and brick walls and open spaces. Original heavy timber trusses and ceiling joists have been sand blasted and will be left exposed. "We are respecting the original building in every way possible," says Stacey McMahan.

The building design is also unique. By utilizing sustainable design/construction strategies such as geothermal, photovoltaics, waste management, reused local materials, etc., the building is registered LEED Platinum with the United States Green Building Council.
