Designed for up to 750 students in grades 6, 7, and 8, Spearfish Middle School contains 24 academic classrooms and 16 other teaching stations arranged in pods. This layout accommodates a broad range of teaching and organizational concepts and is easily expandable. Staff and space efficiency is maximized through use of teacher planning centers and sharing of ancillary areas with the attached high school. A skylit commons and “main street” with laminated wood truss ceilings highlight the school’s interior. This project is a 1993 AIA South Dakota Design Honor Award winner.
