Design Summary
The Huey building was designed in 1977 by local architect Ward Whitwam, FAIA. Forty years later, this project includes additions at both primary facades of the building and a complete interior renovation. The building was designed in the Brutalist style and to maximize density, resulting in seven efficiency units per floor and under nine feet floor-to-floor (the four-story building next door is taller than the six-story Huey Building.) The post-tensioned concrete structure facilitated a compact building but did not readily accommodate conversion to modern housing. The developer required density similar to the existing layout but with amenities to attract market-rate rents.
The design response utilizes an addition on the west side to create two-level lofts with expansive glazing to allow natural light deep into the shotgun-style units. An addition on the east utilizes conventional construction with new stair towers transitioning the varying floor levels. The project improves the streetscape with new seating and landscaping at the sidewalk, welcoming passers-by into the social spaces located inside.
