Design Summary

Built at the intersection of 6th St. and historic Phillips Avenue in 1894, The Milwaukee Road Freight Depot building has a long history of various remodelings and uses that have clouded the character and history of the building. The first step of the full renovation project was to strip back the previous remodels revealing the building’s historic architecture and handsome beauty. The sizeable modern program could then be thoughtfully inserted, with great effort taken to respect the building’s layered history and to differentiate new elements from historic throughout with the use of material, color and texture. The new design removes the warren of small interior spaces opening up the building for most of its length. Subtle white hues and simple lighting contrast with the exposed stone and original concrete floors to develop a sense of spaciousness in a relatively compact building.

Koch Hazard Architects provided complete architectural, interior design and construction administration services for this building.
