Trailhead Learning Center

Client: Yankton School District | Location: Yankton, SD

Date of Completion: 2025 | Area: 69,800 s.f.

The Yankton School District partnered with Koch Hazard Architects and Wold Architects & Engineers to design the almost 70,000 s.f. Trailhead Learning Center. The first of its kind in South Dakota, this early childhood education facility supports a progressive learning model. The project was developed to foster exploration, collaboration, and developmental growth while creating a flexible environment that supports evolving early education approaches. In addition to benefiting students and faculty, the facility serves as a model for future early learning environments across the state.

The design emphasizes collaboration, flexibility, and intuitive wayfinding, with spaces organized to maximize daylight and support active learning. Extensive studies of existing elementary facilities and a comprehensive site selection process informed the planning approach, ensuring the building responds thoughtfully to both educational goals and long-term district needs.

At the heart of the building is a vibrant double-height commons that connects the media center, maker space, cafeteria, and a feature stair. Organic forms and integrated color throughout the interior and exterior create an engaging, welcoming environment that supports curiosity and discovery for young learners.
