Glacial Lakes Distillery

Client: Glacial Lakes Distillery | Location: Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Date of Completion: 2021 | Area: 1,100 s.f.

Design Summary

Glacial Lakes Distillery chose to renovate a neglected building on a popular corner in downtown Sioux Falls. They retained Koch Hazard Architects to create a branded tasting room experience while highlighting the historic architecture of the existing building.

Throughout the decades, the facade of the building remained largely unchanged, while the inside was renovated to meet various uses (radio offices, gas station, and vehicle repair). With the building owner and tenant both wanting to highlight the historic Architecture, it was only natural to complement the fully gutted space with new modern elements. A stair was added to connect the main level from the lower level that boasts natural wood treads and a clean lined cable railing, the brick walls were sand-blasted to clean up markings from various renovations, and the west storefront was returned to operable overhead doors and customer entrance.

A generously sized outdoor patio (three-season seating), pergola and steel planter beds adorn the front of The Distillery for an enjoyable outdoor experience. The design maximizes the customer experience on the main level while keeping back-of-houses spaces out of sight and in the lower level.

Koch Hazard Architects provided complete architectural, interior design and construction administration services for this building.
